Frequently Asked Questions

What is stump grinding?
Instead of using chemicals, dynamite or a digger to remove stumps, JEPP uses a grinder to grind the stump into wood chips below ground level.

By using this method, the whole stump is destroyed and the area is left with minimal damage so that it can be used as part of the garden, replanting or extending your building.

Why stumpgrinding, why not just use the old digger?

Diggers destroy your yard, leave deep intrusions, risk damaging outside light cabling, and in the end cause lots more work and money spent per hour. Here is rough calculation to remove 10 small birch tree stumps with a digger.

  • Digger rental from a friend for one day plus trailer for the mulch = € 180

  • Time taken to do the job = 1 day

  • Time for cleanup re-seeding and lawn to grow back = 4 weeks. Or your whole summer holiday, if that is what you want to be doing for your summer holiday.
JEPP's price for that job is appoximately € 150 which takes a few hours, and no mess to clean up.

So why remove my stumps?

  • Gives you more usable room in your yard.

  • Increases the re-sale value of your house.

  • Looks better

  • Removing diseased trees and stumps lessens the threat of other trees being infected.

What is left of the stump?
JEPP reduces the stump to wood chips that are mixed with the soil in which the stump was standing. This resulting 'mulch' can be used in several ways including:

  • Mulch around trees and shrubs.

  • Wood chips from the deeper part of the stump are mixed with soil,
  • so Compost them for future use in garden beds.

  • The earth wood-chip composition is a good weed-inhibitor.

  • The earth wood-chip composition helps retain moisture to cover your garden and flower beds, shrubs, and small trees.

What to do with the area after the stump is removed?

After the stump is destroyed, the spot is left with soil mixed with wood chips. The ground can then be replanted immediately. If a tree is to be planted in a place where tree has been dead for a long time, its replacement may be planted as close as 1.5 meters from the old tree.

How much does it cost?
JEPP do not charge for travelling but costs are based upon the size and number of stumps to be removed. When asking for a quotation it is necessary to know the number of stumps, how wide and how tall the stump is. This will help us give you a general idea of how much the job will cost.

Do I need to be at home?
We can do the work while the customer is away. An invoice can be left the same day or mailed later.

Will the tree re-grow?
Usually any stump that JEPP destroys will not regrow.

What if I have a stump that is close to the house?
JEPP uses machinery which is ideal for getting into tight spots such as against a wall, deck, or other object that you do not want to have damaged. JEPP can usually take out all signs of a stump literally to within a centiemeter of any structure without causing damage.

My stump is in the back garden..?
Our small machine, which is motorised, is only 60 cm wide, and this allows us to gain access to most small back gardens. It is roughly the same size as a lawnmower.

Is there a limit to how large, or wide a stump JEPP can remove? No, even if you have had a 3 meter stump in your front yard for years and want it removed, you can do this.

How deep does the stump grinder go?
Our machine grinds down to 30cm deep.
